Do You Care?
Do You Care?
(14/8/05)
I’ve gotten tired of people,
Who often ask questions,
But never even bother,
To listen to the answers.
Tired of people who,
Ask about your problems,
But interrupt with their own,
Before you even finish your story.
So tired and frustrated I was,
That every question asked of me,
Instead of a sentence,
I answered with a question.
A friend constantly ask me,
How I was faring with my lover,
But she never seem to listen,
To any of my answers,
So when she asked me again,
I answered, ’Why? Do you care?’
She looked up at me, startled,
Then grew angry at my answer,
‘Fine, I won’t ask you again,’ she said,
And that answered my question.
Another friend always told me,
To talk to him if there’s any problem,
But every time I start to tell him,
He interrupts with his own,
Or tell me it’s a stupid problem.
When again he asked what was wrong,
I answered, ‘Why? Do you care?’
He looked at me, his face red,
Then he stood up and walked away,
And that answered my question.
One day, in a park,
When I sat thinking alone,
A guy came up suddenly,
And sat next to me on the lawn.
He smiled and I nodded,
But kept to my sullen thoughts,
Until he interrupted them,
By asking me a question.
He gazed around the park,
And then focused on me,
‘You look upset,’ he said,
Then asked, ‘Is something wrong?’
I admit I was surprised,
But I gave my usual reply,
I answered, ‘Why? Do you care?’
Because I expect no one to bother.
The guy stared at me and blinked,
He wasn’t angry nor did he walk away,
Instead he asked, ‘Can I be of any help?’
And that answered my question.
